The North Pole Patriots collected their second nonconference volleyball victory over the Monroe Catholic Rams with a four-set decision in Wednesday night’s match in Boileau Hall at Monroe Catholic High School.
North Pole, of the Class 4A Mid Alaska Conference, waon 25-16 in the first set and Monroe Catholic, of the 3A Aurora Conference, emerged with a 25-23 win in the second set.
The Patriots rolled to a 25-10 outcome in the third set and prevailed 27-25 in the fourth set.
The Patriots defeated the Rams in five sets Sept. 10 at North Pole High School.
North Pole head coach Rick Swankie attributed Wednesday’s victory to relentless defense.
“They were actually reading the attack and adjusting their positions to be successful,” Swankie said by phone.
Ainsley Smith distributed 18 assists for the Patriots while putting down seven kills and serving two aces.
Kinley Erickson and Madison Conley each recorded team highs of nine kills. Conley also made five blocks and Erickson served four aces for North Pole, 3-1 overall and 1-0 MAC.
The Rams, 3-2 overall and 2-0 Aurora, were missing three players to illnesses or injuries.
“If you have people out, you have to make adjustments,” Monroe head coach Dave Obermeyer said.
“We looked at it just reloading, and my freshman and sophomore setter came in and did a lot of good things.
“We just couldn’t move our feet defensively. Other than that, I’m really happy with the way we played. We had a lot of heart today.
Setters Cayla Hernandez (freshman) and Erin Hendricks (sophomore) each had 10 assists.
Chloe Maynard delivered a match-high 12 kills and Rams teammate Madeline Muramoto contributed 10. Jenna Hernandez recorded 18 digs and Kaleigh DeLeon had 10.
The Rams visit the Valdez Buccaneers for an Aurora Conference series at 8 p.m. Friday and 11:30 a.m. Saturday.
North Pole visits the Hutchison Hawks, also of the Aurora Conference, at 6 p.m. Tuesday, and drops in on the neighboring West Valley Wolfpack at the same time Wednesday for a MAC contest.
West Valley teammates Kendall Kramer and Daniel Abramowicz paced their respective fields Tuesday in the Region VI Preview 3K meet at the Fairbanks Golf Course.
The meet was conducted on a reduced section of the layout at FGC, which will be used for the Region VI Championships on Sept. 28.
Kramer won Tuesday in 10 minutes, 51 seconds in the girls race and Abramowicz led the boys competition in 9:49.
West Valley’s Naomi Bailey was the girls runner-up in 11:09 and teammate Maggie Druckenmiller was third in 11:14. Jack Cater, also of West Valley, placed second in the boys race in 9:58 and Nenana’s Andrew Stringfellow came in third in 10:06.
