The North Pole High School baseball team generated only two hits against the Lathrop Malemutes in Saturday afternoon’s Mid Alaska Conference game at Newby Field in North Pole.
The Patriots rallied for a 6-3 victory.
North Pole trailed 3-0 after the first inning. The Patriots came back with two runs in the bottom of the third, one run in the fourth and three in their half of the fifth inning.
Riley Perry scored twice for the Patriots and Ben Green, Alex Kazense, Brock Weatherspoon and Mathias Allen-Huisman added single runs.
Alex Garcia was held hitless but was walked twice and drove in two runs. Gavin Fischer had a hit and an RBI.
Fischer also pitched the distance and struck out nine and walked three in the seven-inning contest.
Jagan Nautiyal led Lathrop at the plate with a 2-for-4 effort with a run scored.
Fletcher Burnette had a run and a hit for the Malemutes, and Dane Soderlund scored and drove in a run.
soccer ties, wins
The West Valley High School boys soccer team ended the regular season unbeaten with a 1-1 tie with the Chugiak Mustangs in Saturday’s Railbelt Conference doubleheader at the Fairbanks Youth Soccer Association fields.
Vaughn Simpson scored for the Wolfpack with about seven minutes left in the game. The Mustangs got their goal in the first half.
West Valley finished first in the conference at 15-0-2 overall and 8-0-2 Railbelt. The Wolfpack will be the Railbelt’s top seed in the Division I state tournament Thursday through Saturday at Service High School in Anchorage and at Eagle River High School.
The Wolfpack girls team won 3-1 over the Mustangs. Zoe Staiger and Maisy O’Neill scored in the first half and Morgan DuPont contributed a second-half goal for West Valley.
The Wolfpack, 5-4-1 Railbelt, also are playing in the Division I state tournament.
