Lathrop High School’s Katy McCarter and West Valley’s Ezra Billings earned individual titles Saturday in the Alaska School Activities Association/First National Bank Alaska Swim and Dive State Championships at the Bartlett High School Pool in Anchorage.
West Valley also placed third in the girls team standings with 65 points. Dimond, of Anchorage, won with 100 points, and Eagle River was second with 74.
Lathrop finished in sixth place in the girls standings with 28 points and Monroe Catholic and Hutchison tied for 14th with 11 points apiece. Valdez finished 22nd with one point.
West Valley’s boys also finished third in their respective standings after compiling 49 points.
North Pole ended in a three-way tie for 18th place with four points and Valdez placed 21st with two points.
McCarter captured the girls 50-yard freestyle title after touching the wall first in 24.53 seconds, just four-tenths of a second ahead of Sitka’s Grace Harang. McCarter later placed second in the girls 100 freestyle final in 52.88. Dimond’s Dreamer Kowatch won in 52.63
The girls 100 freestyle final preceded the boys 100 freestyle final, which Billings outpaced the competition in 47.84. Billings also took home the second-place honor in the boys 50 free final after finishing in 21.03.
Heidi Billings, Ezra’s sister, raced to the runner-up finish of 58.68 in the girls 100 backstroke final. Monroe Catholic’s Victoria Schachle took fourth place in 1 minute, 1.63 seconds.
West Valley’s girls 200 medley relay placed fourth, as Heidi Billings, Patty Eppingher, Juliette Benson and Blaque Secor combined for a 1:52.83.
Secor and Benson also swam the first and second legs, respectively, for the Wolfpack’s fourth-place squad (1:42.89) in the girls 200 freestyle relay. The other members of the relay were Meah McCallum and Samantha Bristor.
West Valley’s boys 200 freestyle relay placed third in 1:29.73. The quartet comprised Gabriel Dennis, Logan Fox, Kyan Harnum and Ezra Billings.
Both of West Valley’s 400 freestyle relays gained third-place honors Saturday.
The girls squad of Heidi Billings, Secor, Eppingher and Bristor finished in 3:42.55. The Wolfpack boys’ 400 free relay of Dennis, Fox, Harnum and Billings clocked a 3:17.
Eppingher also placed third in the girls 100 breaststroke final in 1:06.62 and came in fourth in 2:12.70 in the girls 200 individual medley final.
Hutchison’s Grace Greene placed fourth in the girls diving final, compiling a total of 372.85 off the 1-meter board.
Hutchison’s Cassidy Welsh placed fourth inthe girls 500 freestyle in 5 minutes, 18.65 seconds, while West Valley’s Fox was third in the boys 500 in 4:48.25.
