The Hutchison Hawks stayed unbeaten this season with a 25-14, 25-18, 25-15 win over the visiting West Valley Wolfpack in Thursday night’s nonconference high school volleyball match.
The 3-0 Hawks were led by 21 assist from Raven Drake, 18 digs from Bri Majors and nine kills from Jayda Russell, who had 20 attacks.
Sydney Scott chipped in five kills for Hutchison, of the Class 3A Aurora Conference.
It’s the second straight year Hutchison won a regular-season contest over West Valley, of the 4A Mid Alaska Conference.
“They’ve been playing together for a few years, they’re finally jelling as a team, and they’re trusting each other and communicating with each other,’’ first-year Hutchison head coach David Halbrooks, by phone, said of the Hawks’ veteran roster, which includes seniors Majors, Drake, Talya Edgerley and Allyonna Mandregan.
Skyler Wolf led West Valley with 13 digs and she and Pam Noll each had team highs of eight kills.
Thursday’s loss dropped the Wolfpack to 0-3 on the season.
“I think we’re just having a hard time finding our groove right now,” West Valley head coach Dave Cox said. “We’ve got quite a few girls who are not experienced at the varsity level.”
He added, “When we get good opportunities, we’re not making good decisions.”
Noll contributed 11 digs for the Wolfpack and Erin Pomeroy provided nine assists.
Ali May had six assists, and West Valley got two blocks apiece from Wolf and Charlotte Curry.
Both teams return to action next week.
Hutchison visits the Lathrop Malemutes, also of the MAC, at 6 p.m. Thursday and plays host to the Galena Hawks in Aurora Conference action at 6 p.m. Friday and 1 p.m. Saturday.
West Valley visits the Palmer Moose for a nonconference 4A match at 6 p.m. Thursday, and plays in the West Anchorage Spiketacular on Friday and Saturday.
