Delta Junction held on Wednesday for a 3-2 victory over the Hutchison Hawks, giving the Huskies their second win in as many days in an Aurora Conference high school game in the Liewer-Olmstead Ice Arena in Delta Junction.
Jacob Anderson, with assists from Steven Warren and Tyler Hudgin, scored the eventual game-winner and gave Delta Junction a 3-1 with 12:58 left in the third period.
Hutchison’s Alex Shahan cut the lead to one with his goal with 15 seconds left in the game.
Sierra Lesniak, with 1.1 seconds left in the first period, gave the Hawks a 1-0 with a power-play goal. She was assisted by Shahan.
Hudgin set up Anderson for the tying goal with 14:06 left in the second period. Hudgin, with an assist from Anderson, gave the Huskies a 2-1 lead with 6:55 left in the second.
Delta goaltender Greg Hanson recorded 20 saves and Hutchison’s Drake Berrian had 35.
Hanson had 14 saves and Brendan Hudgin stopped eight shots Tuesday in a 15-1 home and conference win over the Monroe Catholic Rams.
Eielson cagers split
The Eielson Ravens split with the Sitka Wolves in a nonconference Class 3A basketball doubleheader Wednesday night at Eielson High School on Eielson Air Force Base.
The Ravens boys, led by Christian Bolton’s 21 points, pulled out a 53-50 overtime victory in the doubleheader finale.
Eielson got 10 points each from Christian Tucker and Chris Scott. Mason Eubanks scored a team-high 14 points for Sitka, which is playing in the Joe T Classic at Lathrop High School today through Saturday.
In the girls game at Eielson, the Wolves emerged with a 50-35.
Tobias Paige led Eielson with 20 points and Georgia Abel contributed 10.
The West Valley Wolfpack basketball teams swept the visiting Barrow Whalers on Wednesday night.
Terrell Peter led the Wolfpack boys team with 13 points in its 65-51 win.
Dylan Erhart contributed 12 points and Tyriq Nance provided 11. Brendan Matthews scored a game-high 14 points and teammate Anthony Fruean chipped in 14 for the Whalers, who are playing in the Joe T Classic at Lathrop.
West Valley’s girls team won 74-55 over Barrow.
WV prevails in OT
Tyler Hoffert scored with Cheeno Gryska’s assist and the West Valley Wolfpack rallied for a 2-1 overtime victory over the North Pole Patriots in a nonconference high school hockey game Tuesday night at the Polar Ice Center in North Pole.
Hoffert’s game-winner came with 2:14 left in the overtime.
The teams tied the game at 1 in the first period in a span of less than 30 seconds.
West Valley’s Coen Wood produced the first goal with an assist from Alex Wuttig with 5:26 left in the first.
Daniel Crutcher, assisted by North Pole teammates Simon Laszloffy and Robert Kittrell, knotted the score with 5 minutes left in the opening period.
Warriors down Patriots
Derek Joseph connected on seven 3-point shots and finished with 24 points to boost the Effie Kokrine Warriors to a 69-62 win over the host North Pole Patriots in Tuesday night’s nonconference boys basketball game in the Dan McHenry Gymnasium.
Kevin Bergman shot 8 for 9 from the free-throw line and finished with 16 points for Effie Kokrine, which got 11 points from Drew Evans.
Alex Garcia scored 24 points and grabbed 15 rebounds for the Patriots. Joseph Campbell contributed 15 points and Adam Selid had 10 for North Pole.
Effie Kokrine compiled 13 3-point baskets, while North Pole had four.
The Patriots are playing today through Saturday in the Dean Cummings Memorial Tournament at Delta Junction High School.
