The Fairbanks Biathlon Club, a branch of the Nordic Ski Club of Fairbanks, is offering a multi-day camp, a one-day clinic and a mini-race at the Birch Hill Recreation Area biathlon range.
No experience is necessary, but participants must be at least 10 years old.
The multi-day camp will be held July 23 and 25, and Aug. 1 and 2 from 8:30-10:00 a.m. at the Birch Hill Recreation Area. Participants will learn biathlon basics as well as rifle safety through fun and games. The camp will be shooting focused. All equipment (rifles/ammo) is provided. The camp cost is $99.
The one-day clinic will be held on Aug. 4 from 3-6 p.m. at the Birch Hill Recreation Area. This event offers an introduction to beginners, and a practice opportunity for those with biathlon experience. All equipment is provided. Participation in the clinic includes free entry in the mini-race that day. The clinic cost is $35 ($20 for multi-day camp participants).
The biathlon mini-race will be held on Aug. 4 starting at 6:30 p.m. No experience is necessary to compete, and all equipment and instruction will be provided, including a mandatory safety clinic beginning at 5:30 p.m. The entry fee for the mini-race is $10 (free for one-day clinic participants). Participants should bring a dish to share for in a potluck following the race.
The head instructor for the biathlon events will be Hillary Saucy. Saucy was a competitive biathlete for nine years, and has coached youth and adults for another nine years as well. Her focus will be teaching sport and life skills in a safe environment through fun and games.
