ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Officials with the U.S. Small Business Administration say low-interest federal disaster loans are available to small businesses financially hurt by this year's low summer king salmon runs in Alaska.

SBA officials say the loans follow the agency's declaration of a disaster in response to a request received last week from Alaska Gov. Sean Parnell.

Officials say assistance also is available to small businesses in areas neighboring the primary affected areas.

According to the SBA, eligibility is based on the disaster's financial impact, not on property damage.

The deadline to return applications for assistance is Aug. 21, 2013.

The poor king runs led to federal disaster declarations earlier this year for the Yukon-Kuskokwim area as well as Cook Inlet.
