Letter to the Editor
Dec. 21, 2012
To the editor:
Daily News-Miner, I am ashamed of you. How could you allow yourself to be the gullible mouthpiece of a fringe of lunatics? So, the old “guns don’t kill people, people kill people” mantra is repeated. This is the same swill we have been served for the past 20 years, 20 years of increasing civil violence.
We have accepted this bad advice for too long. It is time for us to admit that guns kill. Guns in the wrong hands kill innocents. Guns in the hands of innocents kill other innocents.
These “gun enthusiasts” tell us they have a constitutional right to bear arms. That is nonsense. The right to bear arms does not entitle us to amass an arsenal of Howitzers, grenades, missiles or bombs. Why should this right include assault weapons with no other purpose than to kill another human being? No one (including our police force) needs semi-automatic rifles with clips holding rounds of 50 or more and shooting four to six shots per second. They should be illegal to manufacture, to sell and to own. There should be a massive recall of these ridiculous weapons.
How many school children, theatre goers, mall shoppers, politicians and other innocents will it take for us to get really angry about this travesty? I am really angry. I will not send a teddy bear to Connecticut as a passive demonstration of my caring.
What I will do is join or begin a petition to abolish these assault weapons. I also will write my legislators and forewarn them that if they do not sponsor or enact some type of gun control, I will vote for the first candidate who promises to do so. I vote in every election. I am a sane, intelligent woman who is fed up with this carnage. And Daily News-Miner, I am pretty fed up with you. This was stupid of you to put this promotional piece of trash on your front page (Dec. 20). You should be ashamed.
