FAIRBANKS — Four Eielson wrestlers placed in the top six as the Ravens registered an 11th-place finish in the Class 1A-2A-3A state high school wrestling championships Saturday at Nikiski.
Dakota Gardner led the Ravens with a third-place finish in the 113-pound weight class. Kalib Dunlap (120) and Tyler Phillips (145) earned fifth-place finishes and Wyatt Dunlap placed sixth.
“I couldn’t be prouder of the guys on this team considering all they’ve gone through this season,” Eielson coach Vern Dulany said. “We have a team of mostly freshmen and sophomores and we got started a month late because of the overlap with football, so they all did a great job.
“My three captains — Wyatt Dunlap, Tyler Phillips and Nate Ezell — did a great job for me,” Dulany added.
Dulany also credited his assistant coaches with helping Wyatt Dunlap show vast improvement during the short season.
Bethel captured the team title with 187 points with Kotzebue second at 139.5 and Nikiski third at 130.5. Dillingham took fourth with 139.5 and Valdez, which finished second to Eielson at the Denali Conference Championships last weekend, was fifth with 124.5.
Eielson finished 11th with 59. Other Denali Conference teams in the tournament were: Glennallen, 21st with 26.5 points, Hutchison, 38th with 14 and Galena 38th with five.
Gardner captured third place by defeating Skyview’s Austin Craig 10-8.
Kalib Dunlap earned fifth-place points with a 5-3 overtime win against Skyview’s Grant Valiquette.
Phillips finished fifth after posting a 9-4 win against Nikiski Michael Stangel.
Wyatt Dunlap suffered a 10-3 loss to Sam Rininger of Seward in his battle for fifth place.
