FAIRBANKS—

Goaltender Nathaniel Brose registered 27 saves and Jacob Hebard scored twice, leading the Monroe Catholic Rams to a season-opening, 4-0 victory over the North Pole Patriots in Tuesday night’s nonconference high school hockey game at the Big Dipper Ice Arena.

“Nathaniel Brose had an excellent game tonight,” Rams head coach Kirk Haman said by telephone. “His full season last season was excellent and he’s getting better every game.”

Hebard, a forward who transferred from Lathrop, scored the game’s first and last goals. He found the back of the net at 4:30 into the first period with assists Joseph Rauenhorst and Kyle Coiley, who also helped on Hebard’s marker in the third period.

Freshman forward Garrett Grahek scored unassisted at 7:30 of the first period. Hunter Haman made it 3-0 for Monroe at 10:00 of the second period, aided by Carson Keys and freshman Dylan Steele.

“We were playing against a big (Class 4A) school in our first game, and playing against big schools always gets our guys pumped up and gets them in the right frame of mind,” Kirk Haman said.

Alan Heineken recorded 24 saves in the first two periods for North Pole and Jimmy Culley had 12 saves in the third. The Patriots opened the season last week at the Peninsula Challenge in Soldotna.

Monroe is off until the Hutchison Tournament at the Dipper on Nov. 16-17.

No high school hockey games are scheduled tonight. Action resumes Thursday with West Valley playing host to West Anchorage at 3:15 p.m., at the Dipper, followed by Dimond against Lathrop there at 5:15 p.m. The Arctic Bears girls team faces Dimond-West at 6:45 p.m. at the University of Alaska Fairbanks Patty Center Ice Arena. The Delta Junction and Hutchison boys teams are participating in the three-day End of the Road Tournament in Homer.
