McCain campaign calls Palin affair 'vicious lie.'

Published Thursday, September 4, 2008

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- John McCain's campaign is denying a tabloid report that vice president candidate Sarah Palin had an extramarital affair. "It's a vicious lie," spokesman Steve Schmidt said.

The campaign is considering legal action, the senior adviser added.

The National Enquirer wrote in its edition dated Sept. 15 that Palin had an affair with a business associate of her husband, Todd Palin. He discovered the infidelity and dissolved the business, the article said. It attributed the allegation only to "an enemy" of the Alaska governor.

"The smearing of the Palin family must end," Schmidt said in a statement released Wednesday. "The allegations contained on the cover of the National Enquirer insinuating that Gov. Palin had an extramarital affair are categorically false."

Not that I ever read it, but (were I a reader or business owner who carried it) I would cancel my subscription(s).

So, can someone tell me if there is any truth to Palin trying to fire the Wasilla librarian for refusing to take a book (or books) off the shelves at the Wasilla library?

According to what I read today, she tried to fire him, but he had so many supporters that she had to withdraw.

If it is true (which could easily fit into her right-wing Christian stance), then we have a bigger problem than most people realize. Censorship? Banning books?

    Ummm, now that is scary!

    Anti-abortion, pro-creationist, anti-sex education, pro-censorship and book banning?

Wow, what a winner we have here!

So, the idea of a mayor/governor/VP that would ban books doesn't bother you at all?

Well, all I can say is "Seig Heil" to you then BigMike!

Don't suppose you'd like to comment on Wasilla going from a debt free city (when Palin started as Mayor) to being $22 million in debt (when Palin moved on)?

OK, so there has been an overabundance of Palin articles in here lately. But what about a near disasterous propane leak in the Railroad Industrial area on Wed Sept 3rd at about 1:30 PM??? Part of the Industrial area was shut down and businesses in the area were notified. But nada here. What gives?? It made the evening news on TV the same day. But nada here! What a terrable disservice to the residents and businesses of Fairbanks

Wasilla was growing from some 6000 to 9500+ in the past ten years and installed water and sewer systems so people could have homes and work and contribute to the community. And some was probably to cover the community's construction to provide a sports center for youth. Like many communities promoting growth, state loans (incurring principle and interest) were used to fund the large capital projects. Just like bonds are used to fund school renovations and construction in many communities. And guess what - it is called a debt because they didn't consider themselves a welfare community and cry for a grant (free money).

For those who trash the Enquirer on this, you forget they were the ones who initially reported that Jon Edwards cheated on his wife with a campaign manager. He denied it, he threatened to sue and in the end The National Enquirer was correct. Jon Edwards had had an affair with a campaign manager while his wife battled cancer.

Take it with a MASSIVE grain of salt, but I wouldn't dismiss it out of hand just yet.

Palin did intimidate the librarian over some books that "some voters" disliked. I can't find the source at the moment, but it is credible. However, I don't think she actually tried to fire her. Still, I was a bit disturbed by the notion she would intimidate, and that over a refusal to crap on the constitution.

You people need to quit listing to all the CRAP going around. Of course now that she is in the spotlight all kinds of stuff is going to come out. It doesn’t make it all true. And by the way, who of us doesn’t have a few skeletons?

This is awesome stuff!! True or false, killed the librarian or not, this is awesome. This stupidity is sufacing over FEAR. If she wasn't a true threat the Dems would have giggled and turned the other way but this shows just how scared they are. Newsreader tell us again about the time she accepted an extra milk while acting as the hall monitor. Keep'em comming.

Regarding whether Palin fired the head librarian, this is true. According to the book "Sarah" by Kaylene Johnson, which I reviewed for this paper a few weeks ago, Palin cleaned house when she took over as Wasilla mayor. Here's a quote from my review:

"Once she became mayor, she cleaned house, forcing out all her predecessor’s appointed department heads. Palin’s move was quite controversial at the time, but Johnson never provides a satisfactory explanation why the then-mayor did what she did. Particularly in light of Palin’s recent sacking of the state’s Public Safety Commissioner, it would be enlightening to know what happened in Wasilla in 1997."

I don't know all the details, and the book was sketchy on this incident, but it seems she wanted to start from scratch. Many of those she fired were staunch supporters of the previous (three-term) mayor, and the election had been contentious.

I believe at least some of the officials, including the librarian, were reinstated, but again, I don't have a clear picture of what occurred. Anyone with some time to dig in the ADN archives might find more to share.

    Hope this helps.

Love the headline; "McCain campaign calls Palin affair 'vicious lie'"

She had the affair, and it was a vicious lie, I guess.

Well, the Enquirer's Edwards team on-site will let us know.

Interesting that the McCain operatives have stopped posting here -- have the dirty dozen left Alaska for now or are they still vetting?

Interesting mainstream media piece that this RNC was the whitest, richest, oldest group of RNC delegates ever... lots of 'em fell asleep during McCain's snoozer tonight...

Come on, the Democrats now are pouting the fact that experts say it is a gene that makes men have affairs. I guess it is primary Democratic political men who think affairs are beyond their control. Kennedy (all of them), Edwards and Clinton. Maybe these men just need to learn to keep it in their jeans.

I have seen an article (not going to tell you where) about Obama standing next to and talking to an un-named woman late at night, in a hallway last week. Now you (the DNM) have a report about Obama having a long time relationship with a woman. They have 2 “love” children. They are into real strange things, because there were 4 men standing around them and watching..

Let's see if this gets picked up and spread around by the DNM

    BigMike,
I am not so sure it is the Democrats going out on the limbs. The Independent party was holding rallies in MN and a counter convention. If it is the far left liberals stirring the pot then they aren't very supportive of Obama's call to cut out the personal attacks, showing the rest of the world that mud slinging is only one of the unchanged tactics in their blind persuit of change. For all the talk of change from the Democrats, I would expect them to reach out more to undecided Republicans instead of complaining that the Republicans aren't reaching out enough to their undecided voters.

Perhaps my understanding of lawyers taking a hypocritical oath is just prejudicial. If we bring every soldier home from Iraq, does that mean the war on terrorism in Iraq is over, or will we only fight it in Afghanistan while Iraq takes care of their own fledgling democraic government among so many democratic neighbors?

When liberals scare, they tend to conjure up the scariest hell we know in recent history, BigMike. Do not waver and do not fear them. Conjuring up images of Nazi Germany is only one of their multitudes of political upheaval. It is sad. We should pity them. I do. Stay strong, stay right, never waver. Be secure in the knowledge that we, who cherish every citizen of the U.S. will have representation at the highest level in January.

Going to be real interesting to what Wooten's says in his interview with CNN's Anderson Cooper yesterday. Also reported in ADN (9/5) that he was offered $30,000 for an interview with a British media organization. According to John Cyr, Wooten will not be doing that interview - yeah right.

The only thing the National Enquirer is good for lining the cat litter box.

Why can't they just leave her and her family alone? The people starting all this negativity about her family have too much time on their hands or are jealous that she is actually doing something constuctive.

Why the need to bag on Palin? And if she did have an affair? Isn't that between her and her husband?

Furthermore; The ENQUIRER? Really? That's "the source"?

Sidebar comment: Is it just me or does the News Miner really put an anti-conservative spin on their headlines and topics of discussion? I thought that news agencies reported what happens, not spin something into happening.

    Curiouser and Curiouser...

I post two things that I've recently heard from a reliable source out of Wasilla.

The responses that I got that were aimed anywhere near the content of my posts verify that my posts are, in fact, correct.

I would clarify to alleghany that Palin refused to build the sewage treatment that Wasilla needed, but rather choose to build the sports center. (tell me that isn't self serving - a hockey mom decides they needed a sports center, but not sewage treatment?)

Brassmonkey was close - I was told that Palin did try to fire the librarian, however.

nonpartisan was also close, except that the incident with the librarian was not connected to Palin's original "house cleaning" efforts. It was separate.

The rest of the responses that I got, which do not at all address my posts, are the typical grade school playground taunts of "you are the one that is scary", "please move away from Fairbanks", "quit listing to all the CRAP going around", "get out more and listen to something besides talk radio", and "This stupidity is sufacing [sic] over FEAR."

You know, you guys could really use a refresher on what debate is and what it should and should not entail. Ad hominem attacks, personal insults, and flat out denial (without any proof) are immature and should not be involved in intelligent adult discussions.

So, I'll let you guys try again... Here's some more for you --

Sarah campaigned in Wasilla as a "fiscal conservative". During her 6 years as Mayor, she increased general government expenditures by over 33%. During those same 6 years the amount of taxes collected by the City increased by 38%. This was during a period of low inflation (1996-2002). She reduced progressive property taxes and increased a regressive sales tax which taxed even food. The tax cuts that she promoted benefited large corporate property owners way more than they benefited residents.

The huge increases in tax revenues during her mayoral administration weren't enough to fund everything on her wish list though, borrowed money was needed, too. She inherited a city with zero debt, but left it with indebtedness of over $22 million. What did Mayor Palin encourage the voters to borrow money for? Was it the infrastructure that she said she supported? The sewage treatment plant that the city lacked? or a new library? No. $1m for a park. $15m-plus for construction of a multi-use sports complex which she rushed through to build on a piece of property that the City didn't even have clear title to, that was still in litigation 7 yrs later--to the delight of the lawyers involved! The sports complex itself is a nice addition to the community but a huge money pit, not the profit- generator she claimed it would be. She also supported bonds for $5.5m for road projects that could have been done in 5-7 yrs without any borrowing.

So, this "fiscal conservative Republican" grew the gov't, increased taxes, and STILL put the city into debt.

To quote woodman: "Come on, the Democrats now are pouting the fact that experts say it is a gene that makes men have affairs. I guess it is primary (sic) Democratic political men who think affairs are beyond their control. Kennedy (all of them), Edwards and Clinton. Maybe these men just need to learn to keep it in their jeans."

The same goes for Republican men, who seem to have just as many affairs, although their taste lately has run toward other men. Apart from that, I guess it's the same thing: a genetic predisposition.
