Oregon man catches 8-pound halibut in Homer derby, wins $10,000

ANCHORAGE -- An Oregon man won the Homer Jackpot Halibut Derby, turning $10 into $10,000, with just an 8-pound fish.

The fish was the third one caught that was wearing a wire tag worth $10,000, but the first one caught by someone with a derby ticket.

It also is the first time in the 17 years that the derby has had tagged fish that someone has been able to cash in on the $10,000 prize.

Mike Schlimgen hit the jackpot Thursday afternoon while fishing near Seldovia Bay. He says he was laughing because the halibut was so small, but then noticed the gold tag pierced through its gill.

The derby closes at the end of September. There are still three tagged, $10,000 fish out there.
