Perseverance earns ALPA grads their diplomas

Many recent graduates think they persevered to get their diplomas, but the Adult Learning Programs of Alaska class of 2008 know they persevered to finish their education.
More than 100 people in Fairbanks went back and completed courses to get their General Education Development certificates, and they were honored Friday night at the Pioneer Park Centennial Center for the Arts.
In his opening remarks, David Monroe, executive director of ALPA, told the graduates how proud the program was of them. He also commended the graduates on setting goals and not letting fear prevent them from achieving those goals.
“Everyone dreamed really big, woke up and did the work, and that is why they are here,” Monroe said.
Pride and honor were two themes speakers from ALPA wanted to express to the graduating class. Barbara Haney and April Ghalami, instructors with the program, have worked up close and personal with the students and saw their hard work pay off.
The two women don’t just help people get their GEDs, the GED has been a part of their lives. Haney’s father earned a GED later in life and Ghalami is a GED graduate who is now working on a Master’s degree.
“I am honored because I am proud to associate with all of you tonight,” Ghalami told the graduates.
The crowd was filled with parents, spouses, children and friends. North Pole Mayor Doug Isaacson was also among the well-wishers.
Keynote speaker Rep. Jay Ramras’ speech provided a wealth of quotes about perseverance and told the class of 2008 to chose their favorites.
His quotes ranged from Franklin D. Roosevelt to Albert Einstein to a Japanese proverb.
He also urged the graduates to make the most of the moment and remember that now Pioneer Park isn’t just part of Fairbanks history but part of their personal history.
“Do a victory lap every time you come to Pioneer Park,” Ramras said.
The ALPA graduates’ path to their GEDs was unconventional, so their path across the stage was also unconventional.
As graduates crossed, they were allowed to say thank you to the people who helped get them there. Many thanked their families and instructors for their support.
“I want to thank the instructional staff for making a great environment to learn in and to say don’t let anything, no matter what it is, rob you of the future you deserve,” said Emilee Coblentz as she cross the stage.
