Click It or Ticket begins Monday
Published Sunday, May 18, 2008
An aggressive Click It or Ticket seat belt enforcement mobilization campaign to increase seat belt use and reduce highway fatalities will kick off Monday and continue through June 1 around the state.
The emphasis this year is convincing motorists to buckle up — day and night.
According to national statistics, in 2006, 52,762 passenger vehicle occupants died in traffic crashes and 29 percent (15,501) of those occupants killed were not wearing their seat belts at the time of the fatal crash.
In Alaska in 2002, there were 89 fatalities on state roads, 54 of those who died (61 percent) weren’t wearing seat belts.
Five years later, with higher use of seat belts, the accidental loss of life dropped to 33 people.

Thank you Big Brother for keeping me safe from myself.
And the insurance companies were behind this 100%, anyone see their rates go down?
can you explain why there are no seat belts on school buses? i know they have high seats but so does my truck and i have side and front air bags.

In other words
According to national statistics, in 2006, 52,762 occupants died in traffic crashes and 71%(37261) of those occupants killed were wearing seat belts at the time of the fatal crash.....??
if motorist have to wear seatbelts, then motorcyclist should have to wear helmets. You can die with a seatbelt just as easily as if when you don't have one on. I agree also with HAMBONE. Why is it that school buses don't have seatbelts? Schoolbus drivers drive so fast that it is only a matter of time before a bus load of kids are killed from a unsafe bus driver.
Yep, insurance companies run our country. I cant think of any other buisness that I am forced to solicite that is not regulated by the feds.
On another side of this, I also see it as a reason for police to stop vehicles over the next two weeks for any reason that they want. I believe that goes against my constitutional right protecting illegal search and seizures but I am not an attorney so I am only guessing.
I also remember when this law was put on the books back in 94-95. I read a quote from someone (dont remember who) in the DNM that stated they would not use the seatbelt law as a means to stop drivers. IF a person was pulled over for a justified stop AND they didnt have their seatbelt on THEN they could be given a ticket. This is exactly why I dont support a new tax, once something is on the book, someone in a backroom can tweak and change it until it fits they way they really wanted to pass it but knew that it wouldnt because on face value it is wrong.
At the age I am now, I see the value of a sales tax (in some shape or form)and I do see the importance of buckling up, but I do point out that I knew when that quote was in the paper way back then we would eventually have this happen as well.
If I am not mistaken, the whole seatbelt law came from someone suing the Army for not making them wear one on a military base and when they got into an accident and someone died that greedy, grief stricken person sued the military for not having signs up that made them aware they should have. I guess if you dont have common sense, you can sue anyone and feel good about it.
whats funny is that Click it or Ticket will end June 1. What a crock.
Well said wthaidiak! as well as everyone else.
Another point is that the cops are always complaining about being under staffed to cover real crimes, ie: Amanda having to solve who stole her belongings herself, but they have plenty of time to sit on the side of the road hoping to catch someone committing a traffic violation. The nation is becoming a police state and most people won't realize it to it's too late.
If I am not wearing a seatbelt and I have an accident, it will not cause harm to any other people, so why is it a law? When I am riding my motorcycle, I wear a helmet, but that is my personal choice and it should be my personal choice that I wear a seatbelt or not. I don't like to wear one because I have known at least 3 people that would have lived in a car wreck if they had NOT been wearing a belt.
User6244, I would like to see the answer to that stat as well!!
JB
Police can stop you at any time for a seat belt infraction. The legislature made it a primary infraction several years ago. Click it or ticket is just an increased effort with more officers on the street.
To think that they can and/or will only pull you over for a seat belt violation while the program is running is incorrect
What if you drive a vehicle thats equipped with lap belts only?
hckywtchr- isnt that what I said? it was first passed one way and then used as a step for more infringment on our rights and now they are taking that one step further; so YES they NOW can stop you for it, but ORIGINALLY that was not the intent of the law. And, yes it is not just during the program but during the program they plan on more? Either I wasnt clear enough or you only read half of what I said...
and it also wasnt that many years ago because I do remember this from the year I finished my service in the Air Force.

Entirely correct and the source of all the problems concerning nazi troopers and infringements on our time and wallets. I remember 'they' said they would not ask for proof of insurance either, unless there was an accident. Lies piled on lies leading to domination and control and legalized theft via statute.
I was ticketed for no seat belt a couple falls ago, while doing ~5 mph down the side of the road in Nenana. Funny thing was, I had (and knew I had) a brake light out. Due to the circumstances of the stop, I used my brakes 3 times with the trooper directly behind me, yet no mention was made of this during the stop. Theres it is; the stop was about money, not safety; seat belts cost, but the brake light is just a 'fixit' ticket.
Zero tolerance for seat belts? WHAT HAS THIS COUNTRY COME TO? Click it or ticket is a catchy phrase used to polish another dirty law designed only to raise revenue.
Okay heres one for you... my grandmother was in a very serious accident back in the 70's before seat belts were the law. Studies were done on her accident. If she had been wearing her seat belt she would have been killed instantly. But instead the impact threw her into the back seat of her vehicle and she survived. Eventually she did die but almost a year later and not from causes from the accident either.
By the way I do wear my seat belt every single time I'm in a vehicle whether I'm the driver or the passenger
Who paid for all the shiny click it or ticket signs posted everywhere? HMMM. Was the mandatory to wear a seatbelt part of the cell phone law if you dont pass it your state loses out on federal highway money or was that just cell phones does anyone know this off hand. Why is it if you cant talk on your cell phone did i witness a city copper on friday make two calls on his on the steese bridge in a work zone and then make a lane change about five feet in front of me with two blinks of his blinker i guess the law only gets enforced when they want to. Sure i could have followed him and told hom to write himself a ticket but my truck is way to recognizable for that.
I don't believe it is against the law in Alaska to talk and drive. I know it is on military instalations and some states have passed a law, as well. To my knowledge, it is not a law here. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.
