Public Safety Report - April 1

Published Tuesday, April 1, 2008

The public safety report is compiled from criminal complaints filed in state and federal courts, as well as some police blotter information, trooper dispatches, fire department reports and interviews with public safety officials. Individuals named as arrested and/or charged with crimes in this report are presumed innocent until proved guilty in a court of law.

Theft

Alaska State Troopers are investigating the reported the theft of several thousand dollars from the village store in Venetie. The cash was stolen from a safe in the store. The incident was reported on Wednesday. Store employees were interviewed, and troopers are still investigating, according to a trooper report.

Suspicious circumstances

Fairbanks police received a report Sunday that a young boy estimated to be 9 years old had lifted up his shirt and displayed a handgun in his waistband to another young boy near the playground at Joy Elementary School.

Police canvassed the area and talked to other kids on the playground but could find no sign of trouble or the two young boys reportedly involved in the incident, Lt. Tara Tippett of the Fairbanks Police Department said.

“We had four officers and a supervisor over there and we didn’t find anything,” Tippett said.

Snowmachine theft

A red 1995 Ski-Doo was stolen from a home on Gillam Way early Sunday morning. The model of the machine was not given. The theft is believed to have occurred between 2-7 a.m., according to a police report.

    Chris -

Thanks again for a police report that is done in moderation.

Bravo - and keep up the good work

This last weekend had more than a snowmachine taken in the middle of the night. Living downtown, this is the second early spring that my neighbors and I have woke to find eggs on cars, broken windows on vehicles and even a fire extinguisher set of in a car after it was broken into. I reserve the word punk for the people who perform these acts of cowardice just to have a thrill.

there are always eggs on my car every year too. that is weird. Eggs are expensive! I wonder if their mommies know their eggs are being taken!

Wow you guys - I feel for you. I guess having to lock my car doors every night (even in my driveway) isn't as bad as I might have thought. And yet, I saw 3 cops cars this morning and at least 8 on Friday. The roads are being kept safe, but more and more, I'm seeing that our personal property is not.

    This is sad.

Well - for every person the police stop for minor traffic violations there is the possibility they will catch a drug kingpin, terrorist or 16 year old with weed residue!

Clearly this CHANCE justifies the excessive pull-overs I and others have encountered.

Clearly, Newsreader, you must not care about our community (rolls eyes)...hey - maybe the next time an officer writes in these bloggs about all the good things that come from traffic stops he could mention that they 'do it for the children' and throw in a couple of drunk driver references....
That should get the whole community in an frenzy and then maybe we can have full-fledged barricades across Airport Way as checkpoints...I would feel much safer then....or not

akguy maybe your just a bad driver and thats why you get pulled over so much. I am glad that they are pulling people over. I don't want a drunk or pot head on the road to kill my loved ones. If your drunk and smoking pot just stay home don't put yourself and others at risk.

akguy - I think MSB is correct. The roads aren't safe for us anymore - if the drunks don't get ya, the cops will! *LOL*

Seriously though, didn't the trooper's post more-or-less state that they don't bother with these types of crimes - broken windows, eggings, robbery, home invasion, etc... They don't have the time for those things. So, it would seem that my previous post here saying that personal property is not safe is, in fact, entirely correct.

Again with the drunk driver comments....one-track mind with these people.

I have seen several fatalities this season - one of which was an employee at my work. He didn't die of a drunk driver though - he died because he was late for working and driving poorly for the conditions. Very sad.

Maybe the troopers should also ban driving in the snow in Fairbanks - I'll bet that there are more fatalities because of the snow than because of drunk drivers....and, of course, driving in the snow is a choice - just like driving drunk is....

next stop - checkpoints to ensure your cars have chains

Newsreader...maybe you and I should chip in for a horse and buggy - than we could carpool!

I've definitely heard of more incidents involving bad conditions on the road than because of drunk drivers or under the influence of other drugs. Probably helps that the Troopers/Police are taking more of the drunk drivers off the streets. They're doing a superb job. It's just too bad people can't use common sense so that the cops wouldn't have to be the ones keeping us safe FROM them.

Troopers get new cars, money for concentrating on drunk drivers. Same for the war on drugs. As soon as egging becomes a priority with federal funding, you will see the egg task force busting those varmints.

Drunk Driving??? Is that even mentioned in this police blotter? Am I the only one that is bothered by a freaking nine year old with a handgun???

Chris, name names! We know that people charged are innocent till proven guilty.

Besides some of your readers are people trying to keep up with loved ones. Hoping they're not getting in to too much trouble or being hurt in some way.
