A Fairbanks man was charged with felony first-degree assault Saturday after he reportedly slashed another man in the neck with a box cutter at the College Road Safeway store.
The victim told Fairbanks police he and Richard Dale Hurst, 59, were going to the store to get a beer to share when Hurst assaulted him for no reason. Witnesses told police the two men began arguing and that Hurst pinned the victim to a wall and slashed him, according to a criminal complaint filed in Fairbanks court
The victim sustained an approximately 4-inch-long and 1/2-inch deep wound and was taken to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital for treatment.
Fairbanks police responded to Safeway at 4:53 p.m. after receiving multiple reports about the incident. Hurst fled the scene before police arrived but was located nearby and identified by witnesses. Hurst had fresh blood on his clothing and was carrying several box cutters, one of which appeared to have blood on it, according to the complaint.
A records check showed Hurst was on conditions of release for a criminal trespass case and a theft case.
