ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Anchorage police say a pet pitbull that was shot during a standoff has died.

The Anchorage Daily News ( ) says the dog named Blue was released outside by its 22-year-old owner, Lydell Butler, during the standoff Friday evening. Police say the dog was taken to Pet Emergency and it was euthanized.

Police say the dog was shot after it lunged at a police officer.

According to police, the officer was among officers who responded to a call that Butler had sent a woman a text message, violating a domestic violence restraining order.

Parker says Butler also had warrants for his arrest on outstanding burglary, assault and criminal mischief charges.

Butler was arrested for the warrants and on additional charges of assault, resisting arrest and violating a domestic violence restraining order.
