The Fairbanks Fire Department was called to a Bridgewater Drive residence Sunday night to extinguish a blaze. Damage to the residence is estimated at $45,000, though firefighters were able to save many of the family’s personal items by moving them away from the fire and covering them with tarps. No one was injured. Firefighters believe the fire was caused by trash or some other material being burned in the house’s fireplace. Using anything but wood in a fireplace can result in higher temperatures and house fires, said Fairbanks Fire Marshal Ernie Misewicz. He reminds homeowners to research how to properly use fireplaces and wood stoves as many turn to alternative methods of heating their homes due to the high cost of fuel. The house was insured, and the family is currently staying with friends. The University and Fort Wainwright Fire Departments provided mutual aid assistance in battling the blaze.
