The release was the first of several scheduled this week for the 50 eagles that dived into the back of an Ocean Beauty Seafoods truck full of fish guts on Jan. 11 and soaked themselves in fish waste. The eagles were rescued and sent to the Bird Treatment and Education Center in Anchorage for nearly a month's worth of care and rehabilitation. During their month-long stay, the birds had multiple cleanings to get the fish slime out of their feathers and give them time to build up natural protective oils to keep warm. Nineteen more eagles were scheduled to arrive in Kodiak on Tuesday for release. Eighteen eagles died in the back of the truck after being crushed by other eagles or from hypothermia.
