JUNEAU, Alaska - The community of Pelican has opened a new Alaska Marine Highway ferry dock, and it couldn't have come soon enough.

The ferry LeConte docked Tuesday, making it the first ferry to reach this community 70 miles west of Juneau since Sept. 5.

The Juneau Empire reports (http://is.gd/fehvED) Jerue and Smith Transport makes deliveries from Juneau to Pelican.

With the resumption of ferry service, they made their first delivery in six weeks. A company official joked people were getting hungry, and lots of cars left with trunks full of goods.

The $2.3 million dock upgrade included replacing the previous structure with a 6,000-square foot platform dock and ramps.
