FAIRBANKS, Alaska - If you thought it was cold these past couple of days, you may be in for a surprise.

While record low temperatures were recorded elsewhere in Interior Alaska, Fairbanks has been an island of relative warmth. That could end tonight or Friday as the low clouds and flurries that have blanketed the area move out, according to the National Weather Service.

Lows could drop to 35 below zero Friday night, according to Allura Weimer, hydrological meteorological technician at the National Weather Service. Normal temperatures range from 9 above to 9 below zero. The record low for Thursday is 33 below zero, set in 1969.

Record low temperatures were recorded across a large portion of Interior Alaska this week.

Bettles has been the coldest, with a low of 46 degrees below zero. Tanana and Arctic Village recorded lows of 45 below and 40 below zero, while Fort Yukon and the Denali Park Visitors Center saw temperatures of 38 below.

Bettles’ low of 45 below on Tuesday broke the previous record low on that date of 42 below, which was set in 1952. Thursday’s 46-below reading broke the 1993 record of 40 below.

So far clouds have covered much of the Fairbanks area, keeping temperatures relatively moderate. The low at the Fairbanks International Airport has only reached 23 below, although that could change if skies clear. The clouds act as an insulating blanket, preventing warmer air near the ground from radiating out into space.

Warmer temperatures will begin to return early next week. Temperatures in the hills around Fairbanks could reach 20 above, while even the valleys may see temperatures above zero.

No snow is in the forecast, Weimer said.

As usual there are a lot of people who have real difficulty coping with change, IE the new format for the online DNM. Get a life, the News-Miner is a business believe it or not, and they have reasons for changing the site. I'm sure their new site is more efficient and cost effective for them. I had no problems using the new format. This is a FREE service, and I see nothing wrong with the site Julie.

This new site is terrible - but the newsminer is getting rid of unprofitable customers by changing it. That's why they have that attitude of "get used to it" instead of fixing the problems.

As Charlie Dexter if you don't believe me!!

This new format blows worse then a dead battery at -40F. I did the user profile thing and then someone jacked my user-name of OnTheRoad. So now I have a backwards name and commenting is getting to be to much of a pain.

My wife told me the other day that the Fairbanks area is becoming quite populated and asked me where we should move to next in order to get away from the crowds. After extensive research I concluded that the best place to move to is the planet Mars, but if she thinks it gets cold in the Fairbanks area, she ain't seen nothin'. At least there's is a WAL-Mart there.

It seems Julie and other DNM staff usually respond to the various criticisms that people post, but their response is usually along the lines of, "Sorry, you're just going to have to live with it."

At least that's how I perceive the sentiment.

It's amazing that they think anyone would pay to use this newly crippled site.

A peek at the Google Trends data for this site reveals their traffic to be at its lowest point in years.

ADN is pretty user-unfriendly for leaving comments but at least I don't have to logon every time I visit their site.

I will email you and I hope others do as well. I understand where you are coming from but having to login after going offsite for awhile, no idea how many comments on stories. What happened to "most popular stories" and comments? Would some others chime in too please? I will say this much: I rarely visit DNM compared to as before the change. I might come on to scan the headlines or the weather (which takes forever to load). Ya know some of us in the bush don't have the fastest internet speed). No review of post before sending... I could go on...

After a warm Oct. and slow freeze up I wecome the cold temps in Bettles. It will only protect the snogos and ski planes of the Brooks Range from taking the plunge. Let the high pressure dominate. Well, until it's time to dump the skiable powder. The only problematic weather is above 32f.

I hate to disappoint those who wish the site to return to the 'old format,' but that is not possible. This is an entirely new Website, not a redesign. The programming and computer code are very different from the previous site. We have tried to re-create the format as closely as possible on an entirely new platform, but some changes were necessary.

If you have specific suggestions, please let me know at jstricker@mosquitonet.com

But..but.. The earth is getting warmer!! What about the polar bears? Heh.. record cold in Bristol Bay too-- where I'm at hovering around minus 10 for days with brutal wind. Feels more like February than November.

P.S. Please go back to the old website. This one is extremely user-unfriendly and you no doubt are getting a lot less hits than before. It will continue that way until you fix it. Just sayin...

This fall was very much like 1969, so it comes as no surprise that we may have lows that rival those of Nov 1969.

But take heart; 1969/70 was a very mild winter.
