Village firefighters need work

To the editor: Last month there was a fire down the river from Allakaket, the Red Mountain Fire. A hotshot crew was brought in for that fire while there were enough firefighters here in the village. Maybe firefighting rules changed. I don’t know, but they are not letting the village crews fight fires.

I fought fires off and on for 50 years. We used to go to the fires when they were small. We cut line around the fire and put it out. There was no smoke back then. Today there is smoke all summer. Not good for our health.

Firefighting is the only income during the fire season. Village crews need to go out and fight fires again.

Today I can see hotshot crews standing where I once stood.
