UAF’s noisy steam release

To the editor: Whatever the reason for the University of Alaska Fairbanks’ power plant steam release Saturday was for, it was ill-conceived, poorly planed and absolutely unnecessary to be done on that day.

UAF should be ashamed for this to have happened while the Regional High School Track and Field Championship was being held at West Valley High School, immediately adjacent to the power plant.

It doesn’t matter whether the eight-hour time-weighted average noise levels were exceeded or not; the university disrupted the meet for seven hours, with the noise of the steam release affecting the focus and concentration of the student athletes, their student supporters, their families and the volunteer supporters of this wonderful event.

The university owes a huge apology and explanation of this disrupting act to the Fairbanks community.
