To the editor: I encourage voters in the Fairbanks North Star Borough to retain the current Borough Assembly in the local election on Tuesday, Oct. 1.
I am a property owner, a wood burner, a transfer station user, and a taxpayer who doesn’t want to pay any more in taxes than he has to. I am also a citizen who believes our public services are important for a healthy community. Having services like a public library, public schools, a bus system, a recycling center, and an animal shelter make our community a better place.
As an active outdoorsman who skis, bikes, runs, hikes, and snowshoes, I particularly like our trails, parks, and open spaces. Research has shown that exercise and spending time in nature are good for our mental and physical health. An essential component of that is having healthy air to breathe. I support borough efforts to keep our air clean.
A good assembly is one that tries to find that balance between the rights and the needs of all individuals and the needs of the community. It’s not easy. I haven’t agreed with all the actions taken by the current assembly members, but in general I think they have done a really good job. So, I will be voting for the incumbents: Geoffrey Wildridge, Matthew Cooper, Mindy O’Neall, and Shaun Tacke.
Regardless of who you support, please get out and vote. And whoever wins, thank you to everyone who has been willing to run for office. A robust democratic system requires voters and a real choice at the ballot box. Our candidates have already given us choices, so let’s get out there and choose.
