To the editor: The Legislature should meet in Juneau only, where public meetings can be viewed online by everyone through the KTOO Gavel Alaska coverage. Meeting in Wasilla or anywhere else prevents citizens from observing directly and knowing what is being said and by whom. Media coverage is never a replacement for direct citizen oversight, which is essential to democracy.
Does the governor’s desire to have the Legislature meet in Wasilla come from not wanting to have public scrutiny of decision-making? Seems so. It seems like a strategy coming from outside our state, from non-Alaskans who want to control our future for their own gain. Not very democratic. I suggest that Alaskans look deeper into the fiscal strategies derived by Donna Arduin and their ultimate impact in other places. If you believe their propaganda, I propose that you’ve been misled and are being used as a tool for the enrichment of the greediest corporations. Take a fresh look and think again.
