To the editor: I am writing this to voice my strong support for Kathryn Dodge for Fairbanks mayor. Fairbanks is a small, strong, vibrant and diverse community that I am proud to have made my home for the past 30 years. We need a mayor who understands our town, who can represent all of the people who live here, and can work with local businesses and organizations to create a plan that will allow our community to succeed in the face of enormous challenges. Kathryn is that person. She has the smarts, she has the guts, and she has the ability to bring people together, not divide them.
Our current mayor is being praised for his conservative values and for being a lifelong resident of Fairbanks. But his actions show a lack of empathy for community residents, an attitude of entitlement, and a disregard for Fairbanks history. Daily News-Miner stories confirm: He vetoed an equal rights ordinance, he used a city vehicle for personal use, and he demolished the historic Fairbanks Masonic Temple. We don’t need an agenda-driven mayor like Matherly. We need a mayor who will represent and work for all Fairbanksans, no matter their political or religious beliefs. There is a reason why local elections are nonpartisan — because for our city to truly thrive, the mayor needs to represent everyone.
Kathryn Dodge is the best candidate for our town and our entire community. I encourage everyone to vote on Oct. 1.
