Reelect Jim Matherly

To the editor: One aspect of governance that grabs the attention of most voters is the budget. Whether at the local, state or federal level, how much we spend to maintain order and infrastructure can be the source of either joy or discontent. As Fairbanks heads into the local election season, I am thankful that Mayor Jim Matherly has done some things in the fiscal arena that are worthy of his continued service.

First, he has set up budgets that have yielded budget surpluses each year of his tenure. Additionally, he has enhanced the city capital budget, an action that means that Fairbanks, unlike other governmental entities, is not behind in deferred maintenance. As we are told we must sacrifice to fix failure in others’ inability to balance our local, state or federal checkbooks, Mayor Matherly is producing results that indicate he understands it is other people’s money that he is stewarding.

Thank you, Mayor Matherly.
