To the editor: I am writing today to encourage voters in the city of Fairbanks to re-elect Jim Matherly as mayor. There are many reasons why I support Jim’s re-election. First, I’ve known Jim for many years personally. He is warm and engaging. Strangers become friends easily for Jim. In this way he is the epitome of the Golden Heart City.
Second, he is deeply committed to this community. I’m sure all mayors participate in some level of community involvement, but in my opinion Jim sets the bar high. One way he is involved in this community that is near and dear to my heart is how he helps nonprofits. One personal example: About a year and a half ago I was grateful for his willingness to give some time to the Elevate leadership conference. It was an event that I organized for my church to bless leaders in this community. I asked very busy community leaders, including Jim, to come and share their greatest leadership lessons. They shared their time and knowledge with us for free. We did not charge for the conference but did give people the opportunity to give a donation to the Food Bank. The event blessed leaders and raised hundreds of dollars for the good work of the Food Bank. I know that Jim was busy and it would have been easy to say no to a request to help in that way, but he carved out the time and the community of Fairbanks benefited.
For these and many other reasons I encourage Fairbanks to keep Jim leading this community as mayor. Thanks for your consideration of these thoughts.
