Our health care works

To the editor: Last month my wife and I traveled with two couples who are longtime friends. Our trip was a two-week cruise on the Baltic to the Scandinavian countries. Things were great until the last week in Stockholm, Sweden. When climbing those cobblestone streets I became extremely short of breath. When you can’t breathe, not much else matters.

We got back to Fairbanks and right away I did a walk-in to TVC Urgent Care. They saw me immediately and, within that day, Dr. Sheridan ran four tests and correctly diagnosed a large amount of fluid in my right lung pleural cavity and made an appointment for the next day at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital to have it drained. I had immediate relief. More tests were done, but the problem recurred.

After ruling out some bad things, I was referred to a specialist in Seattle. I was successfully operated on and am back home in recovery. The point is that within three weeks I went from struggling to breathe to speedy professional care, relief and then a correct referral to fix the problem long term.

The health care treatment I received in Fairbanks was excellent. When the doctors here couldn’t answer all the questions, they quickly referred me to those who could. Proper health care can mean your life. My thanks go to the many professional men and women who provided me the world’s best and most timely medical care. Thank you.
