Letter to the editor

Oct. 4, 2010

To the editor:

Somehow the National Park Service has evolved into the Nazi Park Service whose real service regulates, alienates and subjugates by imposing their strict will upon free-spirited people.

In a recent incident on the Seward Peninsula, two seasoned Bush pilots were fined when one made an emergency air drop of a hand winch and coil of rope to the other, who was moderately stuck in mud on an old airstrip under the control of the feds.

A short time later, the stuck pilot and wife were back in town. No harm done. The pilots were summoned by the commander, wearing his bulletproof vest and pistol, to be punished for breaking federal rules. It was an insult. But we all felt relieved they didn’t make an attack with helicopters and shotguns.

Why do we have this Nazi mentality to conquer free-spirited Alaskans? Unfortunately, Joe Vogler and John Wayne are no longer with us to chew and punch them out. I’ll vote for a governor and senator who can do both.
