To the editor: The rights and wrongs of abortion have, yet again, taken center stage in our national and state debates. Instead, we should be talking about the fact that the U.S. has the highest infant mortality rate of the world’s 20 richest countries and ranks a dismal No. 46 worldwide when it comes to maternal mortality. In other words, there are 45 other countries where it’s safer to give birth.
This country has the resources to make birth much safer for mothers and infants but apparently little political interest in doing so.
