Increase the oil tax

To the editor: I am disappointed that there has been little or no consideration by the governor and our legislators in Juneau about increasing taxes on the oil companies in Alaska as a way to address the budget issue. Because the bulk of state tax revenue currently comes from oil taxes, the simplest way to increase revenue to the state would be a small increase in taxes on the oil companies.

Surely increasing taxes on the oil companies should be under consideration in Juneau along with personal income taxes and massive budget cuts.

In these difficult budget times we all have to help out, and I’d like to think our oil companies are willing to be good public citizens and help out our state by paying higher oil taxes, if only the governor and the Legislature will find the political courage to consider raising taxes on them.
