To the editor: I am a former Fairbanks Diversity Council member and am deeply saddened to hear about the drop of community membership on the Diversity Council (News-Miner, Oct. 29). Fairbanks is such a multicultural place. I think it is very important to have a Diversity Council to represent and advocate for the diverse communities in Fairbanks, including communities that are often marginalized and oppressed. The Diversity Council helps advise the City Council and the mayor.
During the discussion of Ordinance 6093, the nondiscrimination ordinance, members of the Fairbanks LGBTQA+ community came to the Diversity Council to share their concerns. The council passed a recommendation to send to the City Council to adopt the resolution. I believe it is important we have a functioning Diversity Council to assess the needs in our community and help address community issues.
There is a need for people to apply for the Diversity Council but also to put pressure on Mayor Jim Matherly to fill those seats on the council as soon as possible. We are a multicultural community, with a significant indigenous population, that deserves representation for their concerns. We need the Diversity Council, especially in this political climate where political ideology seems to matter more than people’s lives.
