To the editor: Professor Brandon Boylan has been a mentor and colleague of mine for many years now, and I fully support him for the Fairbanks North Star Borough school board. He is a lifelong educator and understands that the key to success in a university begins with the K-12 systems. His son is also in the school district, providing real interest and purpose for his dad to participate as a member of the school board. Moreover, Brandon has the skills and wisdom to understand difficult issues from a variety of perspectives. Dr. Boylan is an expert on governance at all levels and knows that local government often has the most impact on our lives.
School board members have a very difficult job, and it’s largely thankless and without pay. In general, I know how busy he is, and he could easily pursue and secure other, better-compensated, ventures to occupy his time. Yet Brandon is willing and hopeful to serve. This should tell you something very important about his priorities. The reward for Brandon will be the chance to participate in civic duty — something which we all should strive for and share as citizens.
This Tuesday, Oct. 1, I encourage everyone to join me in support of Brandon Boylan for borough school board. Let’s give him our vote as a measure of our confidence and thanks for stepping up to do the hard work for our educators and students.
