A changed GOP

To the editor: How did the Republican Party go from being the principled patriotic progressive party of Lincoln and Roosevelt to the corrupt conservative nationalistic party puppeteered by Putin into polarizing the country?

Was it Nixon’s Southern strategy of using race as a wedge issue, with more and more Republicans following suit?

Was it the hardball, no compromise stance taken with the rise of Newt Gingrich in the party as exemplified by McConnell’s announced first priority of making sure that Obama wouldn’t be reelected instead of having the good of the nation first?

Or was it the tail wagging the dog of foreign-influenced right-wing media encouraging polarizing polemic?

In any case, the solution is simple. Folks should choose to get their news from reliable sources that speak truth rather than opinion, remember to be principled rather than tribal and to vote accordingly. If enough do so, the Republican Party can regain its luster as a shining example for freedom.
