Opera Fairbanks is hosting auditions for its 2013 season. Auditions are open to all local adult singers and children ages 7 to 14. Singers are asked to call Theresa Reed at 687-6930 to schedule an audition day and time. All singers should bring a prepared piece of music, and an accompanist will be provided.
Roles are open for the April performances of “The Velveteen Rabbit” and for the October performances of “Verdi and the Bard.” Principal roles have been cast for the July performances of “Carmen,” but some smaller roles and chorus member parts are still open. Appointments will be available from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Dec. 7, 5:30-7:30 p.m. Dec. 8 and 2-4 p.m. Dec. 9.
In addition, all UAF music students are invited to a special audition time for the Opera Fairbanks Apprentice Program. Dr. John Hopkins of the UAF music department will audition singers at Davis Concert Hall from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Dec. 7. An accompanist will be provided.
“The Velveteen Rabbit” is a musical adaptation of the classic children’s tale. George Rydlinski will conduct the score composed by R. Martin, and the Fairbanks Youth Symphony orchestra will perform the music. “The Velveteen Rabbit” will include 15 children, ages 7 to 14, and two adults. Performances dates are April 12, 13 and 14.
“Carmen,” one of the world’s most performed operas, is the story of a Spanish gypsy diva who is strong willed and does as she pleases, which often times gets her into big trouble. Other characters in the story include Corporal Don Jose and a bull fighter, Escamillo, who both fall in love with Carmen. Fairbanks’ hometown mezzo soprano and international star Vivica Genaux will return to Fairbanks to sing the title role. This will be Genaux’s United States debut of “Carmen.”
“Carmen” will include a large chorus of men and women all ages and children as young as ages 8 conducted by Maestro Gregory Buchalter and directed by Jonathon Loy, both of the New York Metropolitan Opera. Byron McGilvray will be the chorus master for “Carmen,” which will be sung in French with English subtitles. Performances dates are July 11 and 13.
“Verdi and the Bard” is an original selection of scenes from Verdi’s Shakespeare-based operas — “Macbeth,” “Falstaff” and “Othello.” Actors from Fairbanks Shakespeare Theatre will perform the spoken scenes from the same material as the operas. The opera scenes will be performed with a full orchestra and conducted by Hopkins of the UAF music department. The performance dates are October 12 and 13.
