April 22nd is Earth Day. What kinds of things do you do (recycling, clean-up day) on that day or during the year to take better care of Earth?
Asked on April 18, 2008
“I try not to print e-mails and we recycle newspapers.”
— Renee Webb-Otis, Forbes Storage owner, North Pole
“We have our kids gather cans for recycling and extra credit at school. We recycle newspapers and read the paper online. Instead of filling up dumpsites with items that could be used, we put things under the transfer station platform. At the Boat Shop we use recycled oil and try to be as environmentally-friendly as possible.”
— Harry Schikora, Boat Shop, Finance manager,
“I’m from Washington and I noticed when I arrived here how little recycling there was. I decided to move into a cabin and conserve water. I hand rinse my dishes, use biodegradable soap for dishes, use my own grocery bags, rarely use my car and don’t wash it.”
— Steve Verhoeven, Medic/firefighter,
“I just try not to litter. Other than that not too much.”
— Jordan Gross, Sales associate,
“Personally, I’m always thinking about the earth. I try to buy what I need. I don’t buy things that look like they will break and I try to maintain things like my vehicle. Any kind of material that can be used I don’t throw away, I move it to the transfer site. Planting a Tibetan flag on Everest for Earth Day would be a good idea.”
— Mosa Mohammed, Semi-retired,
“I don’t do too much. We’re going to have an Earth Day fair and I’ll probably go for a few days to learn more about sustainable living. I looked into a wind turbine to see if that would be a viable, economic source of power. I recycle here on campus and support the ASUAF recycling director in trying to get the North Star Borough into looking into alternative energy sources and a recycling system that could work for Fairbanks.”
— Ryan Duffy, Student,
