To the editor:
Here we go again. I heard a new ad today telling Alaskans that they are uncompetitive because of the taxes oil companies are paying. What hooey. We currently tax the producers a little above the mid range of the way they are taxed around the world. Our Legislature, with the urging of then-Gov. Sarah Palin, devised this tax regime after a very thorough process, consulting some of the world’s best experts on the issue.
While I agree we don’t want to be taxing at the highest rate, I certainly don’t want to be at the bottom, which we were until our current tax regime passed.
I urge all Alaskans to support those candidates who will stand up to the producers and secure Alaska’s fair share for our resources. Our constitution mandates it and common sense should be all we need to vote those into office to ensure it. Remember, these are non-renewable resources that we get only one bite of the apple for. Forever.
