A University West man shot his apartment-mate before fatally shooting himself Wednesday night.
Alaska State Troopers responded to a Fairbanks Street apartment at 8:46 p.m. for a report of gunshots. Christopher Carter, 20, and Philip Villa were taken to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital.
Carter, the shooter, died of his injuries Thursday morning.
Villa was flown to Seattle and his condition was stable, trooper spokeswoman Megan Peters said. She said she was not familiar with the extent of Villa’s injuries but said Carter shot himself in the chest area.
Carter and Villa were the only people in the apartment at the time of the shooting, and as of Thursday evening, troopers had not yet determined whether the initial gunshot was accidental or intentional.
“We talked briefly with the one man (Villa), but we haven’t really had a full interview with him,” she said. “Without doing a full interview with the survivor, we can’t really make a complete determination. We really need to interview people.”
Carter’s next of kin were notified.
