FAIRBANKS—Host North Pole swept the Hutchison Hawks but it was a hard-fought 25-11, 25-16, 25-20 victory for the unbeaten Patriots in the nonconference high school volleyball match on Wednesday night.

The 2-0 Patriots had trouble staying energized in the third set, according to head coach Tina Ferringer.

“We had trouble in the third game keeping up the energy on our side and we were making mental errors,” Ferringer said by telephone. “I just told them to focus, take a deep breath and get back on it, and we were able to do that.”

Sophomore outside hitter Amanda Styers supported the Patriots with nine aces and eight digs. Senior middle blocker Kaitlyn McCumby delivered 12 kills and jump-served her way to seven aces while senior outside Sheridan Culver provided 11 kills and aided North Pole with strong digging.

Hutchison statistics weren’t available.

Junior outside hitter Hannah Sponseller contributed six kills for the Patriots, who play Saturday at Monroe Catholic. The junior varsity match begins at 1 p.m., and the varsity contest is set for 2:30 p.m.
