10 YEARS AGO

Aug. 9, 2009 — “I’ve had so much fun in my life — all I have to do is sit back and remember,” said LeNora Conkle on Saturday at the first of three 100th birthday parties in her honor.

Conkle has shared some of her adventurous memories of life in Alaska by writing five books.

The titles include “Bush Pilot’s Wives” and “Hunting: The Way It Was in Our Changing Alaska.”

 

25 YEARS AGO

Aug. 9, 1994 — The three most significant reasons that people come to the fair are the food, the games and the rides, but amid the cotton candy, the candy apples and the basketball shoot, carnival rides still reign supreme.

For the last 12 years, Golden Wheels Amusements has supplied the rides for the Tanana Valley State Fair.

Aug. 9, 1969 — SPACE CENTER, HOUSTON — The Apollo 11 astronauts returned from man’s most dangerous adventure — a landing on the moon — in better shape than previous Apollo crews, their doctor says.
