Two Fairbanks men face felony and misdemeanor charges for reportedly sawing through a door at the Salcha Store and trying to steal an ATM early Wednesday morning.
Jesse Donald Cartier, 27, and Troy Scott Jennings, 30, are charged with felony second-degree burglary, misdemeanor second-degree attempted theft and felony third-degree criminal mischief.
According to a criminal complaint filed in Fairbanks court, the owner of the store, which is at milepost 328 of the Richardson Highway, contacted Alaska State Troopers to report the alarm went off at approximately 6:05 a.m. and that the front door was damaged when she arrived shortly afterward. The owner said she viewed surveillance footage, which showed a man using a power saw to force entry to the store. The man fled in a dark, single cab pickup truck with a male passenger after he triggered the store's alarm system while trying to remove the ATM.
A trooper reported seeing the truck at the Holiday gas station on South Cushman Street earlier that morning and troopers were able to view security footage taken at that time. They were able to identify the two men in the truck as Cartier and Jennings from previous contacts with them, according to the complaint.
Troopers contacted both men at Jennings' house. Cartier said he drove Jennings to the store from a cabin at Harding Lake but stayed in the truck and didn't know what Jennings did inside the store.
Troopers searched the house and found the clothing Jennings was wearing in the surveillance footage. A search of the truck yielded a Milwaukee battery powered circular saw, according to the complaint.
