FAIRBANKS—Fire crews responded to a small wildfire in a residential area near Badger Road on Tuesday.

The half-acre fire started near the intersection of Plack Road and Hollowell Road, north of North Pole and east of Badger Road. The surrounding area is heavily populated, and firefighters fought to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby structures, according to Alaska Division of Forestry spokesman Tim Mowry.

The fire was reported at 12:34 p.m.

Crews were able to suppress the fire in the few hours following the report. Wildland crews stayed on the scene to monitor the fire and extinguish any lingering smolder.

Forestry crews responded to the fire along with personnel from the North Star Volunteer Fire Department. It is not uncommon for wildland crews to work in conjunction with urban fire crews when a wildfire starts within a fire service area, according to Mowry. A helicopter was also called in to drop water on the fire.
