FAIRBANKS — An environmental consultant will inspect a small sinkhole that was reported Monday on Fort Wainwright.

The sinkhole was 3 feet in diameter and open near Building 1420. Inside the hole, wood and metal debris and a partially crushed metal drum were found, according to a news release from the garrison.

No apparent odor, staining or other indication of contamination were found. As a precaution, soil and groundwater from the site will be sampled and taken to a lab for inspection, according to the release.
