A second man has been charged in connection with the Dec. 13 shooting death of Clayton Leon Nelson.
Alaska State Troopers responded Monday morning to Dunkel Street and First Avenue and arrested Gareth Lolnitz, 33, on an outstanding $250,000 warrant. Lolnitz is charged with one count of felony tampering with physical evidence.
Trooper spokesman Ken Marsh confirmed in an email Tuesday afternoon that Lolnitz was arrested Monday "for a murder that happened Dec. 13, 2019." Troopers have not released any additional information about Lolnitz's alleged involvement with the case.
Nelson, 46, was shot in the neck while reportedly trying to retrieve a stolen car from Brian Allan Talbott at an Aeronca Street home. Nelson's friends tried to drive him to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital but stopped to ask for help at the Airport Road Fred Meyer store because Nelson was bleeding profusely. An ambulance responded and Nelson died at the hospital a short time later.
Talbott, 43, was arrested Dec. 14 and charged with first- and second-degree murder, vehicle theft, kidnapping, third-degree assault and weapons misconduct. He is being held at Fairbanks Correctional Center on $1 million bail.
