Those interested in becoming a Red Cross shelter volunteer will have the opportunity at 6 p.m. today.

A three-hour “Shelter Fundamentals” session is being held in the Red Cross of Alaska Far North & Interior Office, at 3501 S Lathrop St., Suite G. The class is for those wishing to help residents following wildfires, as well as other disasters.

The Red Cross shelter set up at Randy Smith Elementary School for the displaced residents of Shovel Creek Fire closed Wednesday afternoon after evacuees were able to return to their homes.

Beginning at noon on Wednesday, residents of the Martin and Perfect Perch neighborhoods were permitted to travel back to Murphy Dome and return to their property, following a successful burn operation by firefighters working in the area.

The residents were initially evacuated to the shelter on July 1 after receiving the alert in the early morning hours of the day. Volunteers remain on standby should the need for further assistance arrive.
