FAIRBANKS—A man was found dead Thursday morning at the scene of a cabin fire off Farmers Loop near the Mushers Hall.
The Steese Volunteer Fire Department received a call about a fire at 3:18 a.m. at 890 Viridian Lane. Firefighters found a fully involved 12-by-16 wood-framed cabin when they arrived, Deputy Fire Chief Scott Learned said.
A man was found deceased inside the cabin. His name has not yet been released, pending positive identification and the notification of his next of kin. The cause of his death has not yet been confirmed. The man was the only occupant of the cabin, although there was another occupied structure on the same property, Learned said. Someone in the other structure reported the fire.
State Fire Marshals, Alaska State Troopers and the Steese fire department are investigating the cause of the fire. The cabin, estimated to have a value of about $5,000, was a total loss.
Fort Wainwright and University fire departments provided mutual aid at the call.
