Dec. 1, 2000 — The Florida presidential election war headed for a historic showdown in the Supreme Court where George W. Bush asked the justices to throw out the hand-counted tally that narrowed his lead over Al Gore.

Dec. 1, 1985 — The School District administration wants to ask voters in a special election this winter if they approve spending more than $10 million to renovate Main School.

Time is running out on the building’s mechanical and electrical systems, Superintendent Ken Burnley said. Lights and fire alarms frequently flicker on and off during the day and code problems need to be addressed, he said, and asbestos needs to be removed.

Dec. 1, 1960 — The state will fulfill its agreement to pay 90 percent of the cost of paving Noble Street next summer, according to the district engineer of the State Division of Highways.

Dec. 1, 1935 — No more dole money will be given state, city or other local governments by the federal government, officials declared today in Washington.

From now on, the federal government’s responsibility in relieving distress will be limited to financing works projects so as to provide jobs to the employables.

Dec. 1, 1910 — The increase of grouse and game birds is not found alone in this section, arrivals from the Iditarod reporting the birds are so numerous in that section that a man can go out and kill 50 in an hour. As in the local case, the increase is because of the fact that the fur bearing animals, such as lynx that prey on the grouse have been cleaned out by trappers.
