Denali Elementary School teacher Christine Villano and University of Alaska Fairbanks associate professor of plant ecology Katie Spellman won an Association Media and Publishing 2012 EXCEL gold award for their scientific magazine writing.

The two taught first-grade children the importance of fighting invasive species in a year-long project.

The article was published in NTSA's "Science and Children" January 2011 magazine and was titled, "Early Primary Invasion Scientists."
