A 28-year-old Kaltag man faces felony charges for reportedly strangling and beating a woman while raping her in Fairbanks last month.

Tyson Len Kriska broke the woman’s jaw and threatened to snap her neck during the incident, according to a criminal complaint filed in Fairbanks court June 25.

Kriska is charged with felony first-degree sexual assault and felony second-degree assault.

Fairbanks police responded to a 17th Avenue home at 5:20 a.m. May 30 for an assault report. The officer found a woman standing barefoot in a driveway with her left eye swollen shut and what appeared to be a broken jaw. The entire left side of the woman’s face was bruised and swollen, and she was bleeding from her mouth, according to the complaint.

The woman told the officer Kriska had been drinking the night before and became angry after she hid the rest of his alcohol. Kriska punched her twice on the head and at least 10 times as she lay face down on a bed. Kriska straddled the woman from behind, pulled her head back by her hair and repeatedly told her he was going to snap her neck.

Kriska slapped the woman several more times and began to rape her. He strangled her with his arm for several seconds and with both hands for about 10 seconds. The woman said Kriska raped her for about 30 minutes and continued to punch her all over her body during the assault, according to the complaint.

After he finished raping the woman, Kriska made himself something to eat, lay down next to her and fell asleep. The woman waited until she heard Kriska snoring, then grabbed her phone, ran from the home and called 911.

Tyson’s criminal history dates back to 2007 and includes convictions for DUI, minor consuming alcohol, two cases of unlawful contact in violation of a court order, felony third-degree assault and two fourth-degree assaults pleaded down from felony assaults. In addition, two 2018 felony assault charges were dismissed as part of a plea deal in another case, and multiple unlawful contact and violating conditions of release were dismissed in the same manner.

Kriska has a pending May 16 unlawful contact case, according to online court records. His next court appearance is scheduled for July 3.
